How to show up on Google Maps: a Business Profile guide
Updated September 30, 2026 · 2 min read
When someone searches “plumber Lugano” or “pizza near me”, the map comes first. To appear there you need a complete Google Business Profile. It’s free and takes less than an hour.
1. Create or claim your profile
Go to business.google.com with the Google account you want to use for the business. Search for your name: if a profile already exists (often auto-created), claim it; otherwise create a new one.
2. Verify
Google needs proof the business is yours: a video of the premises, a phone call, a postcard or an email. Unverified profiles don’t show up reliably.
3. Fill in everything — really
The more complete the profile, the more often it appears. Check:
- A precise primary category (e.g. “Electrician”, not just “Services”)
- Address, or service area if you work at customers’ premises
- Opening hours, including holidays
- Phone number and website link
- At least 10 real photos: outside, inside, work, team
- Services or menu with indicative prices
4. Reviews: ask at the right moment
Reviews matter for ranking and even more for trust. The best moment to ask is right after a job well done: send the direct “Write a review” link on WhatsApp. Reply to every review, negative ones too — calmly and specifically.
Don’t buy reviews or write them for customers: it breaks Google’s rules and, in Switzerland, can violate the Unfair Competition Act.
5. Connect profile and website
Name, address and phone must match exactly on the website and the profile. A clear page per city or region plus structured data helps Google understand where you work. Every Atelier Lago site includes this local SEO.
